Well, besides my own (hahaha.. right?) I really liked:

    (In no particular order)

    MC Griffin’s
    MarLouie’s
    Luke Ski’s
    Pat’s

    Good luck everyone.. Awesome job.
I definitely want to see a finished product from Pat and MarLouie.

    Peace.

Real quick, because I didn’t figure it out right away so I thought someone else might have a problem too: Click the little arrow to the right of the video list for more. Mine’s second to last.

Parroting Wil’s sentiment of “Besides mine, the ones I really liked, in no particular order” are:

Drywall Unzipped: Breakfast Time – Wil Hines
    Robotophile – MC Griffin
The Kid With The Broken Halo Trailer – Pat Grubb

Wow, there were 13 ENTRIES! And they are all so great. As I said in a previous comment, it’s so cool so see so many people out the who love Scud as much as I do.

By the way, when I uploaded my video to YouTube, it garbled the sound a bit. I have no idea how or why. I also uploaded it to MySpace, and that version sounds fine, so if anyone wants to watch my Scud music video with better sound, go here: http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=39541068

Hey MC Griffin, would you be willing to post the lyrics to the original Scud rap by Dan Harmon? I love that track, but some of the lyrics I’ve never been able to make out, and you seem to have deciphered it.

Well, I gotta get back to finishing my next album. Good luck everyone, and great job!

Yeah, Ski, I’m having a similar problem with mine, except it’s the aspect ratio. This window seems to not like it for some reason. Video comes out all stretched from bottom to top. Blargh, YouTube. Here’s mine all better: http://blip.tv/file/1134427

Anyway, I’m a big, big fan of the Scud Rap and MC’s Robotophile. Also, Drywall Unzipped and Marlouie’s drawless/claymation hybrid. If I had to pick a favorite besides my own, where I’m a smidge biased, it would be Robotophile for the cool story and animation that looks like it took forever.

    Thanks guys.

My tops are similar. Wil Hines. Pat Grubb. Luke Ski. Special consideration to Kansas McGrath for making puppets and using real audio from Sean Connery and Woodstock, that’s pretty clever, and I definitely can relate to trying to pull stuff out at the last minute.

About the Dan Harman Scud rap: We actually made an attempt to contact him through his Myspizzle, but he never returned our e-mail. Understandable. But the only recourse was to take down what we THOUGHT were the lyrics and hope we were close. Some things I know for sure are what they are, some things I’m pretty sure I deciphered, and then other lyrical bits just didn’t sound like anything. For those I just wrote down words that sounded like whatever syllables were being spoken, whether it was right or not (so some of this just reads as absurd).

My feet crack the cement when I run my guns never run out of breath
Bright as the sun, but I’m the color of death
My dome is bullet proof, I’m thicker than blood
And I drain my glocks with brand-name SCUD
Yellow and red, hello, see me, your dead.
I pull the trigger for you, you make a sandwich, you go to bed.

Chrome planted the jam, designated to die
Put your name in the series, you’re a surrogate, why
(In retrospect, this last part could’ve been “Put your name in the CD to assist your suicide” or something like that.)

No muss no fuss no pill no got no soul just everything you could sow.
(Sounded more like that, but in the video we said “Not a thing that you can control”, ‘cause we could make more sense out of that, and it fit with our little rhythm we had going)
I’m bombing now and watch what I do because,
You didn’t make me a slave, you made me better than you.

I got the target acquired and a fear ya won’t like
Your man of the year has appeared in my sight
All systems go, all crap stops now
Ya better pee yer’ pants ya better milk the cow.

I’d say that’s 70 to 85 percent accurate. I always loved that rap. Memorized it from the options menu of the Scud Saturn game when I was a kid. Especially loved the “You didn’t make me a slave, you made me better than you” bit, ‘cause that was always my favorite element of Scud. The need and desire to resist your programming.

Thanks again to all the peeps who entered the contest and sorry for the super long-winded post.

Heh, here’s my translation, based on yours:

My feet crack the cement when I run, my guns never run out of breath.

Yellow and red. Hello? See me? You’re dead.
I pull the trigger for you, you make a sandwich, you go to bed.

Maybe Rob can shed some light on this?

I have to give MAJOR Kudos to Pat and MC! I dont know who I would choose for first place between them, I might go so far as to call it a tie. Pats look so damn flippin unbelievably awesome… but MCs had an original creative story, and it looked great too…. and i could watch Sussudio’s boobs bounce like that all day! 3rd place is another tie between the drywall puppet and the claymation/drawless animation movie… damn Rob is screwed. I dont envy him making this decision!

All the videos were fun to watch so those of you who made stuff that isnt being talked about as often, I want to thank you I really love that so many people entered I wish i was as talented in animating/filming. I probably will make a film eventually but kudos to all of you for doing it now! My favorite thing is how they are all done using different methods!

Rob how bout another contest same time next year… you should totally go annual with this… it was great fun, even only as a spectator for now.

PS Thanks again Pat… I video recorded yours off my computer and into my phone… that scene of scud bouncing all over the alley makes awesome wallpaper!

Hi everyone! This was great for Scud and Scud fans. I am amazed at how many talented Scud fans there are out there. And thanks Rob for putting the fire under our asses:) I know it was great for me coz it help me explore, experiment and expand my skill set at indy film making. That and it was fun working with Scud. And I know Pat can agree with me that 3mins isn’t much time for all the things we wanted to include in a scud film(I hope to see Pat finish he’s and post it somewhere). I had so much extra footage that I decided that I’d just make it as long as it needs to be and just enter part one. But if anyone is interested here is part 2 and I should be done with part 3 in a week.

    Best of luck to everyone!

I also was impressed with both the story and the excellent boobie physics on display in MC’s submission.

Had a lot of fun doing this project. At the beginning, in about early June, I started mine but lost focus. But up until last week I knew that I just couldn’t pass July 31st and not feel guilty. Making a deadline is a great feeling.
Totally for an annual thing too!

    A pre-congrats to the winners!

That was really fun watching all of your entries.
    My favorites were:
Pat’s super slick animated sequence although he sacrificed original story for technical proficience. McGriffin’s hand drawn animation- new creature, great personality to Scud (like the choice of voice talent) and Sussudio (big eyes and bouncy) and action worthy of any Saturday morning cartoon (even technically better those cartoons were pretty crappy). Wil Hine’s work stuck out from the other entries utilizing a live action puppet set up that is reminiscent of Sesame Street, Muppets, Peter Jackson’s puppet work and even Rob’s work. I love this one. It made me feel the way I felt when I first read that book. If I was giving the prize it would get it. I would give an honorable mention to Destroyer of Ants cause I love the “Marty. Scud is real” stuff, also the little hand draw piece that follows is super cool. The dialogue and over all attitude of this one is hilarious.

    Those are my HO.

Thanks for the fun guys. Now I gotta go pick up the omnibus.

    Cheers,
    Josh

I gotta say too, I know it’s not an official contest entry, but MarLouie’s second part of his video is great.

I love that he came up with his own sort of retelling of the first Scud story, and uses his own dialogue, and Jeff sound-bites and everything. I’m really eager to see part three man. Let us know when you have it up.

definitely a tie between MC griffens entry and Pat.

*Griffens is just awesome for how well it fits into Scud’s realm and for the obvious time spent.(smooth animation too.)

*Pat’s entry is obvious how amazing Scud could be as a 3D film. the round about shot of him shooting is the best Scud has ever looked outside comics. I just wish he had more time to add more.

Pat I know this may jump the line of what we can ask on a scud blog, but my wife (a scud fan thanks to me) was wondering what kind of things youve worked on recently… shes severely impressed by the work you have up and wonders what kind of paid gigs youve had? Anything we wouldve seen -like a commercial or something? -you didnt secretly do toy story for pixar or anything like that did you? =P you need to get into one of those companies…. and then force them to pick up scud without changing a damn thing!

Keep it up man if theres more to see, i think i speak for everyone on here when i say we’ll be here waiting for it!

PS oh and once you finish issue 1 feel free to do the other 23 issues… you know, in all that spare time you must have lol i wish i happened to be a millionaire just so i could commission this!

Oh and that new second part of your three part ark was sweet- Marlouie -i Love that you got to shove in some Dark Knight in there, I almost wish you submitted that segment instead! I cant wait for the last part!

    Shawn –

Speaking for Pat (I’m the guy who did the voices for Pat’s entry), he’s been working hard on a bunch of corporate projects. Unfortunately, they’re not visible to the public and he can’t showcase them due to privacy rights, which kinda sucks for his demos. And no, he’s not a Pixar animator, although I have no doubt he’d be extremely flattered by the implication.

And yes, the plan is to keep up the adaptation of the first issue into mini-chunks and do them as time allows. I just recorded the rest of the first issue’s dialogue (whatever I hadn’t done already, essentially, including Spidergod and the hospital scene) and sent it off to Pat today. He’s actually across the country from me; I’m out in Southern CA and he’s up in Pennsylvania (I think). My part is quick: I record it, it sounds good, and I send it off. Pat’s part is the labor-intensive work, so we’ll have to see how quickly the shorts will come together.

Also, as I’ve been monitoring this contest from the sidelines, Robotophile is excellent. I’m biased towards Pat’s for obvious reasons, but great work on that short.

i am just happy i was able to make something and have fun .
there are a lot of great submissions you got and i imagine it will be a very very difficult decision to make .
good luck to everyone , and i bowl down to you rob schrab for managing to churn out such a die hard fan base willing to do 3d animation for a fan film compitition , that stuff takes alot of time and talent to do , and fosho hella love for Scud .

    21 JTP

Yeah, having a contest each year would not only be fun but it would keep Scud fresh in the minds of everyone! Maybe there should be another ‘Tales From The Vending Machine’ series?! (that’s what I based my animation on :p)

  22. Gravatar Icon
    22 Shawn Cier

I’m not sure who’s who anymore beyond the top 4 that everyone keeps talking about…. but if I had to pick a 5th favorite I think it would be the sailor moon twins one…. mostly cause I love the animation style… the story was quirky and silly a tiny bit predictable, but I love the construction paper style animation!

Im glad to hear people getting behind my idea of it being annual (not that im the only person who wouldve thought of such an obvious idea lol) I think im also the first to ask Tales of the vending machine to be continued…. but again an obvious idea…now im thinking a little further then that…. and now that Scud is part of the image universe….What if they made “What If…” Style TFTVM!?

Like what if Scud passed by the WALKING DEAD story, Or Invincible…. hmm, on second thoughts those comics are great but maybe that would ruin things… well maybe the creators could think of something somehow happening between things -so its an alternate universe scud, but the same scud… or maybe somehow this happens using horse and scud secretly uses horse by himself occassionally to get back to his anti-hero roots after he and sussudio have seattles down and had some cyborgs (Mr. Incredible rip off -i know).

It just seems obvious to happen… the newest Scuds have sold out in mulitple covers/prints -and there are so many artists at image that could do awesome Scud stories!

  23. Gravatar Icon
    23 Shawn Cier

ROB -Has the idea of a continued TFTVM been in talks AT ALL at image? Would the take on that still be divided with your second partner? Is it something YOU would be okay with if it was offered?

    24 the great Luke Ski

Hey, just gotta chime in and applaud for Marlouie after having seen Part 2 of his version of Issue #1. That’s great work! Thanks Griffin for pointing it out here. :)

  25. Gravatar Icon
    25 Shawn Cier

I think (assuming Rob is ok with it) We should demand it from Image… Fans have shown their dedication here and an obvious desire for more Scud (in practically any incarnation) and its certainly no leap to think that the next comic with Scud’s name on the cover would be a huge sell out hit! Almost all the internet comic critics have said in their shows that not only do they love it, but that they are NEW to the comic… I’ve been on board since issue three and the ten year gap only strengthened my love for the book and most people I’ve shared scud with seem to feel as connected to it but if the 4 issue ending alone was enough to bring in new fans as well, the fan base may be stronger then ever!

It just seems like a win win wituation for Image and Scud fans to have something ongoing related to Scud! And I think we can convince them if we put one tenth as much work into it as the animators have here… FANS UNITE! -umm, anyone agree with me on this? (LOL) Cause I’ll try to figure out who to badger at image and wizard magazine!

  26. Gravatar Icon
    26 Pat

Rob, you have created a monster. :D

Hey, Alex. Yeah, it gets a little delicate talking about work… I think there’s only one thing I’ve done so far in my professional career that I’m even allowed to use in my portfolio, and I don’t even really want to. I am very much still starting out though, still trying to “break in.” I’m good with modeling and lighting but still have to work on my animation before I’m anywhere even approaching a place like Pixar. I appreciate the encouragement, guys.

I have a story I wrote for “Tales Of The Vending Machine” starring Scud Lite back in ‘97. So I would be all for the return of TFTVM and/or the Scud Fan Film contest becoming annual, so I can finally tell that story. I hope that if the latter happens, Rob lets us know about it super-early so I (and everybody else) have more time to work on our entries. I also hope we’d get up to 10 minutes for our entries. I know that goes against the Channel 101 / Acceptable TV philosophy, I just suspect I wouldn’t be able to adequately tell the story in under three minutes, but I could in under ten and have time for closing credits at the end.

Speaking of closing credits, since my music video didn’t have any, I should mention that the Scud Jingle music was done by Chris Mezzolesta of the comedy band Power Salad, who also sang vocals on it along with myself and my good friend and frequent Luke Ski song vocalist Carrie Dahlby. Any artwork that wasn’t obviously directly from the Scud comics was done by myself, along with everything else that encompasses the song/video, under a budget of about $13.

Hey thats a great second contest! even I can draw, maybe we can all submit TFTVMs in PDF forms here like that other person did… (pretty cool job by the way! I like having Scud be a video game controlled assassin -that was clever!)

I’m involved with a 24-hour live streaming audio internet all comedy music station called Dementia Radio (dot org). A friend of mine who goes by the handle Break Man Z was D.J.ing live the other night, and after playing my “Scud” song, did an impromtu review of “The Whole Shebang”, which he had just picked up at his local comic shop. You can hear other fan/friends of mine in the background chiming in with comments via Skype. Here’s the review, posted courtesy of another friend, WildCard:

Pat are you even allowed to talk about the things youve done?

Like if you did a commercial for something… are you allowed to say that you did it or are you like removed entirely from it once they pay you?

If you are able to say in text what youve done, Im sure we wouldnt be the only people curious! We’re both (my wife and I) art teachers so that might explain our curiosity!

I believe once something’s released to the public, my talking about it is fair game. I’m a little fuzzier on whether that means I can display it personally. Mostly, I’m just trying to be safe.

I really haven’t done anything so glamorous yet that you’d have seen it and 90% of my work has been with one place that’s only publicly released one thing I’ve done. You can see it here:

    http://www.cfzentertainment.com/main.html

    Second video down.

But that was almost a year ago that I began work on that thing and my skillset in all areas has improved exponentially. Not a great showcase.

The wife thought that was adorable, and I enjoyed it too! You’re definately right that youve improved in every way, still your character shows a bit of the style you seem to have in the other movies in your sight and the character is detailed and well done! The animation is pretty damn sweet considering youre not pixar, so I’m not sure why youre down on yourself about that! Both art teachers give you a thumbs up and we cant wait to see more from you -maybe a few Shrek films down the line!
