and man am I glad i managed to find the old issues before this is going to drop. it was already hard-as-hell to track them down, it’ll be nuts once this happens.
Its so weird tho. I suddenly thought about Scud earlier this week after 10 years, and I get wonderful news like this! I can’t wait to hear more. Somebody needs to post this on Wikipedia.
I’m about to start it in the next week. I’m freaking out.
In the meantime, if anyone has any questions about the Scud 1-20 (like “I never understood what this meant or what inspired that?”) Feel free to ask here. I’m going to keep 21 pretty secret so expect alot of “No comment” about that. I’m more interested in what still resonates in your heads after all these years.
I’m hoping to have it out by Comic Con this summer in a big, kick ass book of all the other issues. (Should make the one’s you have even more valuable -so hang on to them).
Thanks, guys. This is all for you.
One quote that always stuck out was ’ I am Jesus Christ with a laser gun and now your all gonna die”. Which was then followed by ” ROCK THE CASBAH” you have made this fanboys head explode with this news…thank you.
I’ve got a few questions I guess, they are really kind of nit-picking with the Sepharim’s logic. I know that the book has a lot of Christian mythology behind it, with the Rapture and Angels, and the Apocolypse. But question, if god can make the universe, why did they want material things that humans created?
The Sepharim made it sound like that after the world ended and everybody died on Earth, that they would waltz in and take everything for themselves. Why didn’t they just make any of that stuff they wanted so bad themselves?
And if they wanted the stuff so bad, why did they keep trying to destroy it all? I mean with the black hole, and some of the ideas you had for ending the world, everything would be destroyed. There would be nothing left for them to waltz in and claim.
It seems like they have some kind of beef with humanity itself, for continuing to survive. And its kind of gone to a “Well if we can’t have it, no one can”-mentality.
Why is that? Is it just because they have grown more and more pissed with humans because they keep surviving?
I mean if everything is worthless to them because everything is mutated, shouldn’t they just leave humanity alone? I mean its really not Humanitys fault that everythings mutated, it was the rapture and everything, everything is fucked up because GOD were tampering with reality.
So were they lying to Scud about their true motives? Or do they just want destruction because they are bored with existence? Or are they just mad at humans?
To me, Scud got all the answers I needed in issue 20 as well as the Unzipped one shot. Issue 20 cleared up not just the Horse stuff, but also let us know a bit about why the world seems so surreal. Outside of that, I personally kind of prefer having some things unexplained.
One thing I’ve always wondered is if when 21 were to come out, would it wrap up La Cosa Nostroid as well? I’ve always been equally in love with both Scud and LCN.
How Canonical are The Tales from the Vending Machines? Do they happen in the same Universe (or Parallel Universes)? Or just at different parts of the Time Line?
Because in Doug’s story, the “Devil” is still alive. And Jesus is still around as well, but he’s no-where to be seen while his Father is getting zapped up by the Sepharim. But when Scud 20 is occuring the Devil has been consumed by System.
Also, you always said that Scud was fueled by heartbreak, and there is so much symbolism of loss in the series. The Girl that can only love things that can’t really love her back, or whose love she can turn off with a switch.
The Machine that falls in love, and can’t be turned off. And he loses the one thing that means something to him.
Because if Scud is supposed to be a manifestation of you, and the storyline a kind of elaborated stylized version of things that occured, then it seems like you’re trying to say something about the girl you loved, about who you were, and about the pain of the loss after it was over.
Thats what I guessed at least, You were Scud, Sussudio was the girl you loved, and it was all symbolic of the heartbreak and loss from losing her. And the feeling of losing purpose after losing her.
How much is inspired by things that really happened to you in your life?
When I think of SCUD I always think of Peter Alberts. What is his role going to be on this one? Is he going to write it and let Dan take all of the glory, credit and money again?
The thing that makes SCUD work for me is that it feels like your signature from the late 90s. I don’t see how you can write like a late 90s Rob Schrab so I’d like to see you bring your new experience and story confidence to this last book. Make it your signature and we fans will just have to come along for the ride. Assume that it’s going to be a let down after 10 years of expectation so do your thing so that you’re satisfied and you can put him to bed properly.
So when you say “big, kick-ass book of all the other issues”, does that mean I’ll eventually be able to replace my issues 1-4 that I lost? Because man, I’ve been looking, and pickin’s is slim.
Excellent! Very much looking forward to this one. I don’t know if I have any fan-boy questions for you, but I re-read the trades every year so the story is still pretty fresh in my mind. Your art (along with others like Doug) inspires my own, so I still look at it pretty regularly when I’m working on a project.
So it IS going to be in comic form, and not film/animation, then? I am personally glad to hear that, though I would still love to see a kick-ass animated Scud sometime in the future. Man, that’d be sweet…can’t wait for the book, though!
SCUD was a comic that absolutely warped my mind while entering my teenage years, and the fact that the comic was never truly ‘finished’ left it as something that always came to mind when I reflect on my favorite comics of all time. From the art, to the storytelling (I thought the dark nature of 20, while apparently inspired by personal pain, was a tremendous jump), to even it’s humor (a warewolf arm!?!), the comic really grabbed me, and never let go.
Cut to this past summer when I was in a theater being presently surprised by a film called MONSTER HOUSE, and what should I see appear in the credits? The name of that guy who did that freaking great comic about an assassin robot with a soul.
And now I hear SCUD is coming ‘back’. Compounding that with the fact that there will be a collected edition that FINALLY ends the story (along with giving me replacements for the issues long lost to time), its having my inner 12 year old do back flips.
I guess it’s worth mentioning that in recent years I’ve started writing comics of my own, and I really hope to do something that inspires someone how SCUD did me…
Thanks Rob, I can’t wait for it. By the by, is there really a SCUD figure coming from Shocker Toys? Or are they blowing smoke again?
I actually first discovered your stuff with Channel 101 and a link from Film Threat, so this’ll be like a whole brand new land of extra special for me!
“Are you going to put your old shit back in print too because I kinda want to get the books again. I sold my signed copy of the first book for like 30 bucks on ebay a few years ago though, thanks Robby.
ps. try not to make the ending mushy and gay because you’re happy with a girlfriend now.”
So, I told this guy:
“please don’t tell me what to do.
I understand you have your concerns and you were just trying to bond but I am a complete stranger to you and you need to have a wee bit of tact or your just going to come across like a hundred other people who “mess” with me.
I don’t like being messed with unless it’s by a friend.
How many pages will the final issue have? Did Sussudio really have to die…?? Is she really dead? How about having her soul somehow merge with Jeff’s body? We could have a Jeff Sussudio? Mr. Schrab, if you were to proceed with a movie, with real actors, who would you cast to play Sussudio? And who would voice Scud?
this is the best news ever. i was completely content with the series ending at 20 and just interpreting my own ending but i never expected this to happen.
scud was the reason i started drawing comics and is the reason im the artist who i am today. thanks for the wonderful inspiration rob and i cant wait to grab the massive trade for my collection.
i got a question tho. do you ever plan on doing comics after scud? it’d be nice to see.
Are you doing it in color?
Who is the publisher?
Will you write a bit of commentary before or after the book?
I’m rereleasing GEAR at the end of this month (Hi, I’m whoring out Rob’s site) and we’re doing it in color. I not only put your original pin-up art in the back but I offered a kind of backhistory about how I met you guys, what happened to GEAR and how it became CATSCRATCH.
I hate individual issues and I’m beginning to hate collecting multiple graphic novels so I really like buying the series all together. It requires less house-keeping on my part.
You once gave me an original page from book one…it’s buried in storage and probably being eaten by rats. Serves me right for not properly framing it.
You’ll be another fun reason to go to the con this year! I’ll dress like Sailor Moon and you can be Kimba the white lion.
I don’t know why I didn’t think through the color question first…as if you could just sit down and bang through 650 pages while creating book 21. Email me when I can come over and hang. I want to watch you actually put Sharpie to paper. I’ll take a digital picture so you can post it here (because I’m the only guy you know who has a digital camera on his phone).
sorry rob….i just walked away from the computer….and remembered this question:
how rare was the variant cover for #18? the one with sussudio and scud on the cover… I got one, and was just wondering if it was rare, or only released at certain cons…
All I can say is that this is something I thought I would never see, but secretly hoped I would. Scud was one of the characters that really changed my youth, and was among the myriad of influences that pushed me toward becoming an artist. I’ve been tracking down old issues as I find them over the last six or seven years, and scouring eBay for Trades (since the official site is sold out.)
I guess it come down to this: Thanks Rob. I can’t wait to read it.
well i still have a variflex skateboard that you drew for me when you were a freshmen in highschool/1988. i’m holding on to that one forever!. it has scratches on it, but still in good shape.
To quote Ron, “that is good news”. Scud has always been a fave and I’m glad you’ve got the love back. I’m a wee bit retentive, so the incompleteness of Scud always got on my tits a bit. It will be good to get the weight off them (they’re not very big from a man-boob perspective) with #21.
Coupla questions…
What was the change in head shape about between the early and later issues? I don’t have any issues about it wrt continuity, just asking what brought about the change. I like the angular/cornered head FWIW.
The black and white eye. This a yin/yang/karmic balance thing, a black and white reference to Bowie or just cos it looks good?
The Phil Collins reference. Is the name as per Phabulous Phil’s definition that it’s an imaginary girl’s name meant to symbolise any girl, are you just expressing a personal preference for “No Jackets Required”, or are you contrasting the hot babe with a name after a not-so-hot song (the song gets an F+. Click).
How did the Sepharim get God into the position where he got bound up in kinky electro-bondage gear?
Sooo… that’s the shit that keeps me up at night. Wrt you Vlog, I was an older fanboy, only a couple years younger than you when you were writing it. I reckon I would have missed a lot of Scud if I was in my early teens.
To quote Ron, “that is good news”.
> Thank you. I agree.
Scud has always been a fave and I’m glad you’ve got the love back.
>Me too.
I’m a wee bit retentive, so the incompleteness of Scud always got on my tits a bit. It will be good to get the weight off them (they’re not very big from a man-boob perspective) with #21.

> I liked it better angular.
The black and white eye. This a yin/yang/karmic balance thing, a black and white reference to Bowie or just cos it looks good?
> He’s taking aim.

> yes. yes, to all of these questions.
How did the Sepharim get God into the position where he got bound up in kinky electro-bondage gear?
> They used retentive in a sentence.
You know I don’t speak Spanish… it’s a cross-hemispherical translation thing obviously… I was originally asking why Scud has the one black eye, and one white eye. You said it’s cos he is taking aim (ie one eye open, one closed). But as he appears with the black/white eye combo all the time, that would mean he’s walking around with one eye closed, therefore he has monocular, not binocular vision. So, I suggested that you might in fact be taking the piss out of my question.
I’d always assumed the black/white combo was just cos it looked cool. And it’s cool to be a robot.
Jeff was something I drew after a comdysportZ show. I just saw Saturn 3 and loved Hector’s head -looked like a plug. It really spiraled out from there, “If he’s got a plug-head he’s got to have mousetrap hands, etc…”
I named him after my older brother. I like INsane monsters with normal human names. Thought it was funny and made it weirder giving her and male name.
This is beautiful by the way and I do remember it.
Thanks for acknowledging my comments on yer VLog. Funny thing…I ran my Scud fan site as part of a college project (I was 19 at the time) in which we were supposed to create a website on any topic (I evidently spent more on comic books than I did on booze).
I’m just gonna kiss ass… because this is big news to me.
Good luck with #21 Rob. I can’t wait to see/read it. I hope you have a great time doing it. Don’t let the pricks get ya down.
Drown the pricks out in an SEP field…
Now I gotta go track down 1-20.
Again, good luck and be sure to have a great time doing it. That’s what matters. Work that has been done for the fun of it always turns out better than work that’s been done for the hell of it
YESSS!!!!! I started reading Scud after about issue 5 or 6, and it was the best thing on the stands at the time. There is a god!!! Please make sure to include Drywall in the epic finale! I even made a lifesize Scud out of wood for a 3-D design project in college (art major here), with toy guns and everything – the book was that much of an influence on me.
You have no fucking clue, Rob, how many of us idiots on the official (or unofficial, I don’t remember), Scud mailing list are now going to be having to change pants. That fucking mailing list went on for months after you’d said you’d quit because the industry sucks, and we all wanted to beg and plead you for more. Thank you so much.
When I cleaned out and sold/threw out my comic book colletion SCUD was the only series I kept close. I have all 20 issues. Number 5 signed by you from Wizard World (Chicago ComiCon at the time I think). You’ve been a huge inspiration and some my fondest memories of High School were reading SCUD and sharing the latest issue in art class with my buddies.
Have fun Rob. I’ll have a table in San Diego this year so this is something extra special to look forward to.
Only problem is… I might want to see more once Scud is wrapped up
i’m absolutely shocked and amazed that scud 21 is happening. that said, i have another schrab related character to ask about: the black octopus! as much as i love the scud stuff… this is one of the coolest spin-off characters that ever showed up in the fireman universe and i’m just upset we didn’t get to see more. it was definitely one of those “have a taste, but don’t get too interested” moments. any chance we’ll see any more of miss samantha gritt any time soon… scud 21 perhaps? i won’t hold my breath, but i will keep my fingers crossed. good luck!
It’s great news that Scud is coming back!!!There needs to be on huge paperback with all the issues, because tracking them down over here is a nightmare!!
Who would you think would be perfect to voice Scud? Pardon me if he did have a voice in the game, but I’ve discovered this comic recently. Thanks a lot for the greatness.
Originally, My idea was to have John Malkovich be Scud. But Scud’s character changed a lot from the first issue to the Third. When I was casting for the MTV animated series (Which got canned on the year anniversary of them canning the Robot Bastard series) we were trying to get Jason Lee. This was before The Incredibles and Monster House. He would be perfect, I think. Rob Pearlman was going to be Spidergod. Ahhhh, MTV.
OMG… a bit late in the game, but scud 21 is awesome news! I can only hope I can get my hands on it here in Belgium, that sure wasn’t an easy task years ago with the og scuds…
I don’t know why Scud popped into my head out of nowhere but I decided to take a look at the old Scud.com and then found here through google.
I still have EVERY ISSUE. I can remember drawing scud in my sketchbook for art class in High School, before I was even serious about art. I’m currently a traditional animator and have taken 1 year in 3d animation thanks to the assassin doodles which have evolved into my own eventual art. I even like keeping with detailed art with simplistic hard angles because it still looks cool and fresh after all these years.
If there’s going to be a fan art section, I’m going to make some new stuff.
I’m currently working on a new site design for my website and the only stuff I have up right now is on my cafepress. Hope the link isn’t taken as spamming.
This is cool. I’ll definitely pick up a copy when it comes out. Scud was fun stuff, and I’d enjoy reading more of it. I don’t know how the new issue will turn out or if I’ll enjoy it in the end as much as I did some of the other Scud material (‘cause it’s basically an unknown quantity to me at this point) – but I really look forward to finding out.
I found out about this pretty much by accident – I’m moving out of my apartment, and while moving my stuff I found my old copies of Scud and LCN and did some reading. That piqued my interest (specifically to see if there ever was an LCN #10) and led to Wikipedia which led here.
I’ve generally enjoyed your responses to overzealous fanboyism and similar issues – a good, straightforward reality check. I think it can be easy to lose track of reality when your hobby is buying into someone else’s fantasy. I spent a lot of time building up people into heroes in my mind, because I enjoyed their work – last year I had an opportunity to meet one of these “heroes” and it was rather enlightening.
I think it’s pretty cool that you’ve been able to get involved with filmmaking, since it’s something you really wanted to do, and I hope that’s going well. Realizing an ambition like that is worth quite a lot. I don’t remember if I’d noticed your name when watching Monster House (I have a vague recollection that I may have seen it in the credits and gone “huh? Same guy?”) but I think that movie turned out really well.
Fantastic news. I was pretty young when Scud was first coming out, and it killed me for years that I never found a copy of it. Now that I’ve had blueballs for about three years after reading that ending, I’ll finally get some closure. Thanks for the new issue and thanks for Channel 101!
I just found out about this today. It’s like someone just gave me a shot of happiness directly into my brain. Could it be true? SCUD returns? Much to my boyish delight!? It’s like christmas and my birthday both at the same time and they both gave me guns!
Now that I’m less hysterical I’m just going to restate how unbelieveably happy I am to see this happen I was about 8 when I first read Scud and I fell in Love with that comic. I made it popular in my group of friends and this, this news has lifted my spirits higher than they’ve been in months.
My brother collected your whole series and I know he is going to be psyched when he hears about this.
There are very few comicbooks where, when I read them and they blow my mind so much that I really want to know more about the creator, and to probe him with questions. Scud was one of these. When I think of some good questions, remind me to probe you (“probe you” in italics). Thanks Rob, you’re a rockstar.
On a side note, I loved scud so much, and thought that he should have his own action figure I made one of my own. I’ll post pictures when I get a chance. His body and head are made out of marker caps and I had to cut aladdins legs off to make scuds shorts.
Well it’s about flippin’ time Boyo! I thought I’d never see me favorite self-destructive Robo-Hero again, let alone get tha scoop on what happened ta God and Sussudio! I’d love ta team-up with Scud in tha comics one day… Now where’s the last issue of La Cosa Nostroid??? BEHAVE! -UG
Rob… you ARE going to be releasing a compilation of issues #1-21, aren’t you? Will the ‘Tales from the Vending Machine’ issues be included? I sold all my old issues to my brother way back….
Yeah, I’m sorry about posting that. I went through, did all the research and watched your v-logs, like, right after I posted that. I don’t really care about ‘Tales’ if you had nothing to do with it. I heard that Doug TenNapel did one of them, though. That’d be interesting… anyway, thanks for doing this, and giving up on the D video and everything. I don’t even read comics anymore, but I’m totally psyched about this.
Rob,
Seriously, Scud is easily my favorite comic. I happened across the wikipedia entry for it recently and saw the news of 21 and my now Fiancee’ and I are floored. This could not be better news, as the first thing that my now Fiancee’ and I shared was Scud. I told her to check it out sometime, after classes she bought the first TPB on a whim, then days later bought the other 2 trades. It was the first thing that really got us talking, and now 3 years later, we’re out of college, moving in together and getting married.
For a question, are you planning on any appearances in New England? Meeting the man that pretty much got us talking and started our relationship with a comic about heartbreak would be beyond surreal.
Hey… ^ I’M the guy who bought that 1-20 run…. because I can’t wait for the damn book (yes, I’m a moron). Only the 1st two are “signed”, but I think they may be forged. Oh well, it doesn’t matter. I only bought them so I could read them again.
Dan. I feel very sorry for you, but this isn’t really the place for that discussion. I lost a lot of my old books in one of the few moves from place to place, and just replaced 1-18 of my collection recently through eBay.
$20? Wow, you got a deal then, man. I saw 1-13 go for $80 (not buy it now). That’s why I got overzealous and jumped when I saw the full run. But don’t feel sorry for me, I’m happy. The big book, in all its bad-ass glory, will be a great addition to my newly acquired Scud collection.
Rob, now that Image is publishing the big book, is there any hope of new T-Shirts being made? I loved the originals, especially the replica shirt. Jus wonderin’
LAST CHAPTER OF SCUD WILL BER RELEASED AS 4 PT. MINI SERIES IN FEB. 2008
Here’s the cover of the first book done by the awesome Ashley Wood, Scud the Disposable Assassin #21 “Return of the Over-Used Muse.” Released by Image
That’s right, for those of you who already have the previous books this is good news! And for those who do not, never fear the Big-Ass Scud book featuring Scud 1-24 will be out June 2008, right after Scud #24 comes out. This way you don’t have to wait so long for the final book!
It’s kinda cool. For a few short months Scud the Disposable Assassin will be alive again. I never thought I’d see the #21 on the cover of Scud but here it be.
Each cover will be done by a Guest artist-
#22 – Jim Mahfood (March 2008) “Challenge of the Over-Used Muse”
#23 – David Hartman (April 2008) “Retaliation of the Over-Used Muse”
#24 – Doug Tennapel (May 2008) “Death of the Over-Used Muse”
The book breaks up nicely into four installments and will feature pin-ups and cool shit inside. Only 15 pages to go and I’m done! I smell a Scud Vlog a comin’!
Wow this is awesome. My brother used to be a big fan in the 90’s (yeah :/ used to…) but last year i found an old issue of his and read it and was instantly a fan. It was one of those how-the-hell-did-I-not-know-about-this-before moments. I bought all the issues i could find and loved it…then i got to the end of 20 and was like WTF? But great to hear you don’t hate Scud anymore.
Yeah…..I’m not good at waiting, why don’t you send me the issues NOW? Kidding of course, but now that you have all this tv/film industry cred, any ideas to create your own scud tv/movie, or just as good, an all original Rob Schrab creation?
Wow nice cover! I can’t even begin to tell you how psyched I am, and Feb is my birthday – so feel free to publish special kudos to me in #21! So any new details on the figure? is it one figure or a line? and any chance a detachable were-arm can be included!?
anyway -most important question (plaguing me for almost a decade) there used to be tons of computer art involving scud, by one of the guys who did part of the big crap scare, but i cant find it anywhere anymore… any chance i can buy/download/steal/be sent some of that amazing scud computer art? my broken heart yearns for the one of him on the miniplane most extensively!
next most important thing…. sincere thanks and welcome back…. weve been waiting for you.
ps a guy on ebay once made a bunch of scud ministaues for me, care for a pic? they came out rather nice.
I have a picture ready for you but I cant seem to get it to drop into this white box…. is there somewhere i can send it and you can post it? The pic is of the main cast -if you like it -I’ll send more of some other characters! Are those PC Art Scud pictures still posted anywhere? About 5 years back i bothered to research the artist and found his site, but for some reason he removed all the Scud related art by then even though he had his crap scare art up!
PS. Just bought a Sega Saturn JUST to play Scud…. Level Two is a little monotonous…. but overall, it’s not such a bad game for its time. Are there any cheats? I need something to give me more continues – I want to play all the way through without having to keep starting over. Also any chance youre going to bring back any of the merchandise (specifically T-shirts and stickers) that you used to sell at your site? I’d love to get some new Scud-wear….my oldies are a bit tattered from over use!
Wow, I was just looking on the wikipedia Scud entry because I felt nostalgic and I couldn’t even believe it when I read that #21 will finally be coming out. Thank you so much for finally doing this, the bitter 14 year old clutching his copy of Scud #20 that lives inside of me can finally be at peace. Are there still plans for a movie? If so, please shoot it in Vancouver so I can audition (and fail) for a voice role. Again, thank you so much, I’ve been a fan of yours for years but Scud remains my favourite.
My wife was re-reading the Scud issues and asked what the effect of a damnation gun actually is…. does it just send you to Hell? (as if that wouldn’t be so bad -LOL)
Anyway how many pages left? And any word on the PC art pics… now ‘m all psyched up about them- wish you could publish them all in your 90 page tome or whatever its up to!
i’m also making another statue pic collection for you… maybe ill get it to you this week, it has the Sol, and Ben, and a few others not in the first set that i sent ya.
I have a few holes in my Scud collection, so I’m most definetely going to be picking up the one-volume additions when it comes out. So I’m wondering, shouldn’t I just hold off on buying the single issues coming out since they’ll be included in the big volume? Are there things that will be in inssues 21-24 that won’t be in the complete edition?
Hey Rob, been a couple weeks but i managed to get another pic together of more clay figures i had made of your characters… youve probably moved on by now lol im sure you have alot going on… anyway just out of curiosity did you get around to posting the first image? and where were you going to do that?
also if you were able to find any of the digital pics by Elwood let me know… i just got a new pc and im thinking of making a screen saver of just scud art and other then yours -i believe his is definately the next coolest thing…. although i did have fun looking through some fan art on DeviantArt.com…. Anyone out there looking to see some decent stuff to wet your appetite for feb, check it out!
By the way i was wondering if youre going to cram any cool stuff into the omnibus that wasnt in the original printings… like unpublished sketches you drew in crayon on the paper they put over your table at the macaroni grill? I thought that would be a good enough reason to have your true fans turn over another $?? the new book will cost (consider we all have several copies of the old issues and will be waiting at the store every wed morning in february til we get the new stuff) -not to give you more work, but even a typed version of the would be original ending (kind of an alternative ending easter egg) would be an awesome addition as well!
Oh and PLZ have some new t-shirts made, im dying to give you some money for the ability to psych myself up even more for the ending by buying anythin Scud i dont already have -which is nothing that exists so far….so put some new stuff somewhere or draw scud on a t-shirt with sharpie and send it to me for $20! this is the best time! fans are dying to go crazy for your stuff right now!
Yeah, i was shocked about what happened with Oswald, but after reconsidering…. (Spoiler Alert!) you dont seem to get attached to many characters in your books… no one other then Scud appears in more then like 6 issues. I was also impressed by the story…. it really almost seemed like the end was planned since the beginning… things like the easter egg, and jeff, and marvins mannequins…. the way you connected things from the origin were close to seemless! nicei work! Now when is issue 22 coming out lol…. and talk image into bringing back Tales from the vending machine! I know your work with scud is over…. but maybe some other creative teams could give it a whack! That was always a good idea!
You know, I haven’t been keeping up to date on what you were doing, Rob. I’d completely given up hope that SCUD’s story would ever be complete. This was the comic book that got me into comic books, and every now and again I’d think ‘Wow, it’s been X years since #20 came out, what a shame.’ I treasure my collection; I have the series, the oneshot, the Tales From the Vending Machine and the D&O Show. I only haven’t yet gotten La Cosa Nostroid, and about 10 minutes ago I decided to look it up on ebay. You can imagine my shock and delight when I discovered issue #21 existed, and I had to check google for everything that’s going on now. Last I heard, Oliver Stone was interested in your stuff, and I’m sorry to hear now about all the aborted projects that happened since. But hey, congrats on Monster House, Sarah Silverman, and all your other successful collaborations with Stiller, Black et al.
Incidentally, I believe Ashley Wood is also working on the new Tank Girl, another cult series back from the dead.
Anyway, I’m glad that you’ve made your peace with comics as a creative medium, may your ideas never stop flowing! I’m going out to find the new issues ASAP, and I’m going to try not to weep openly when I buy them.
Glad you finally got around to finishing SCUD. It was such an important, great book to my early comic reading years. The shoppe I worked at in high schoolpushed it onto everybody who walked in the door.
Hopefully La Cosa Nostroid will soon follow.
My real question, in relation to the fantastic tpb, is why were the opening credit pages, with the voice casts and soundtracks, etc, not included? I LOVED those and looked forward to them every month. I remember looking up any actor whose name I didn’trecognizeso that I could know who they were and then see them in my head as I read the book. SO much fun. They were sorely missed.
Also, is it possibly (from anyone reading this in fact) that there’s a way to get scans now of those credit pages? I’d love to see them again. It’s been ages.
Great work all around, Rob (and Dan). Looking forward to whatever comes next.
-Daniel
This is the best Christmas EVER!....even though its already over.
Cheer
WHAT? Please let this be true…
Hell yeah….
and man am I glad i managed to find the old issues before this is going to drop. it was already hard-as-hell to track them down, it’ll be nuts once this happens.
Thanks.
Sa-weet! I used to run one of the fansites waaaaay back in the day.
Holy Shisse!
This is great news indeed! (Wringing hands) At last, my collection will be complete Mooo-HAh-Hah-HAH!
Best News Ever.
Its so weird tho. I suddenly thought about Scud earlier this week after 10 years, and I get wonderful news like this! I can’t wait to hear more. Somebody needs to post this on Wikipedia.
Malcolm
Oh geez. This is awesome on toast.
Wow, this is great news!
Also a couple of other questions.
Ew. I opened a kettle of worms. I’m going to eat a sandwich and talk at you later.
Holy Fuck!
I think I just hit my head on the ceiling.
I’m stoked to see what happens next.
Thanks, Rob, and good luck.
This is great news!
so damn happy about this …
thank you.
hippy haiku, brother tucker!
Insanity. Well good luck Rob. Can’t wait.
Oh…and does this mean you’ll sit down at the Con for 5 minutes and get a damn table?
Wow, this is amazing news.
That is FIT.
I actually first discovered your stuff with Channel 101 and a link from Film Threat, so this’ll be like a whole brand new land of extra special for me!
i just orgasmed four times in a row. In my PANTS.
EMAILS THAT PISS ME OFF:
Ah, it’s good to be back? Here we go:
Glad you’re looking forward to it.”
And who would voice Scud?
oh man,
this is the best news ever. i was completely content with the series ending at 20 and just interpreting my own ending but i never expected this to happen.
scud was the reason i started drawing comics and is the reason im the artist who i am today. thanks for the wonderful inspiration rob and i cant wait to grab the massive trade for my collection.
i got a question tho. do you ever plan on doing comics after scud? it’d be nice to see.
take it easy rob.
Will Drywall or Oswald make an appearance in issue 21?
I’m pretty much not going to say anything more about 21. You can ask about 1-20 though.
Are you doing it in color? – No. It’s going to be ALL of the books with 21. I don’t have time to do that.
Who is the publisher? – Image. You and Gear are the reason this is happening.
Will you write a bit of commentary before or after the book? – yes.
Image is a good home for creators.
I have had a hard time tracking down the last two trades, although I have a few scattered issues, so a BIG HONKING book would be sweet
Holy crap on a stick…. I just got up from passing out and had to re-read the posts….
Thank you Rob….thank you. I can finally read the book, then I’ll smoke a big cigar, lean back… and remember the happy times.
good luck Rob…looking forward to it!
sorry rob… I may be a little retarded, but will #21 come out as a stand alone issue, or will it only be available with 1-20 in collected format?
sorry rob….i just walked away from the computer….and remembered this question:
how rare was the variant cover for #18? the one with sussudio and scud on the cover… I got one, and was just wondering if it was rare, or only released at certain cons…
Extemely rare. I haven’t seen one in years.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Scud-the-Disposable-Assassin-full-run-1-20-Schrab-NM_W0QQitemZ230072957416QQihZ013QQcategoryZ3979QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Is the #18 there the alternate cover, or the normal one? Because thats the one i’ve got.
Perhaps I don’t know this because I can’t find my old issues of Scud but here goes anyway…
What does Spidergod tell Captain Jack Jones and Liuetennant schwartz in issue 13 on pg 12?
Take care,
Malcolm
Best way to start the new year by far.

To quote Ron, “that is good news”.

> yes. yes, to all of these questions.
How did the Sepharim get God into the position where he got bound up in kinky electro-bondage gear?
> They used retentive in a sentence.
Taking aim? All the time? So Scud only has monocular vision? Or do I detect a hint of urine, cos you’re taking the piss…
But I buy that the use of retentive might have got God antsy and eager for some Searphim lovin.

>I wish I could help you but I don’t understand what you’re saying.
“I wish I could help you but I don’t understand what you’re saying”
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
one question i have is the design for jeff. what was your inspiration for her? one of the best designs ive ever seen. a true inspiration.
i also dug up some scud fan art i did about 5 years ago. I actually showed rob this at san diego when i first met him way back in 2002 i think.
http://www.shanehillman.com/scudcolors.jpg
Keep up the good work.
-Vince
Keep the Scud art coming! I’ll try to put up a fan art section on the site. Maybe I’ll give a sandwich to my favorite.
The news of #21 has made my day. Possibly my year.
As long as you’re answering questions on issues 1-20… what’s the deal with Spidergod?
You have no fucking clue, Rob, how many of us idiots on the official (or unofficial, I don’t remember), Scud mailing list are now going to be having to change pants. That fucking mailing list went on for months after you’d said you’d quit because the industry sucks, and we all wanted to beg and plead you for more. Thank you so much.
“Keep the Scud art coming! I’ll try to put up a fan art section on the site”
Always knew there was a reason I didn’t delete this…

Unbelievable. Can’t believe it.
Only problem is… I might want to see more once Scud is wrapped up
Take care and a huge THANK YOU!
-bob.
i’m absolutely shocked and amazed that scud 21 is happening. that said, i have another schrab related character to ask about: the black octopus! as much as i love the scud stuff… this is one of the coolest spin-off characters that ever showed up in the fireman universe and i’m just upset we didn’t get to see more. it was definitely one of those “have a taste, but don’t get too interested” moments. any chance we’ll see any more of miss samantha gritt any time soon… scud 21 perhaps? i won’t hold my breath, but i will keep my fingers crossed. good luck!
It’s great news that Scud is coming back!!!There needs to be on huge paperback with all the issues, because tracking them down over here is a nightmare!!
P.S I loved “Monster House”
I think it can be easy to lose track of reality when your hobby is buying into
someone else’sfantasy. I spent a lot of time building up people into heroes in my mind, because I enjoyed their work – last year I had an opportunity to meet one of these “heroes” and it was rather enlightening.I think it’s pretty cool that you’ve been able to get involved with filmmaking, since it’s something you really wanted to do, and I hope that’s going well.
Hugh, Howaah, WAUGH!? SWEET CHRISTWAGONS!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Rob, your fans everywhere are cheering.
Will 21 really be the end? That robot can never self destruct damn it! Cool intro in JTHM: Directors Cut. You are a Genius.
Here’s a question: Will the consolidation of all the book be available for pre-order? If so, when’s this all going to take place?
If you can’t hold on… if you can’t hold on… hooold on…
Help me out, yeah yeah yeah, you gotta help me out, don’t put me on the back burner.
And when their is no where else to run, is their room for 1 more… (comic?)
I got Sol but I’m not a Soldier. x10
BUTTON TO SCUD VLOGs
Well it’s about flippin’ time Boyo! I thought I’d never see me favorite self-destructive Robo-Hero again, let alone get tha scoop on what happened ta God and Sussudio! I’d love ta team-up with Scud in tha comics one day… Now where’s the last issue of La Cosa Nostroid??? BEHAVE! -UG
Hey! Scud’s been my favourite for yeeaars! Fuck I cant wait for the new comic!

Rob… you ARE going to be releasing a compilation of issues #1-21, aren’t you? Will the ‘Tales from the Vending Machine’ issues be included? I sold all my old issues to my brother way back….
Issues 1-21 + Drywall unzipped will be included in the Big Book. Tales will not be included.
Oh, and Drywall unzipped; awesome.
Rob,
Seriously, Scud is easily my favorite comic.
Meeting the man that pretty much got us talking and started our relationship with a comic about heartbreak would be beyond surreal.
i’ll see what i can do.
Rob, how about coming to my house for dinner if you are ever in the Austin area?
Much Schrab love down here.
For those looking on eBay, Scud is now being sold at a higher price that previously. Namely a full 1-20 run, all signed by Mr. Schrab himself:

$120 buy it now, color me impressed.
For $20.
((Sorry, Rob. Hope this isn’t regarded as spam.))
I got my full run, second, for 60 bucks about 4 months ago.
I needed some for just collectors reasons, and my originals were well worn.
Rob, now that Image is publishing the big book, is there any hope of new T-Shirts being made? I loved the originals, especially the replica shirt. Jus wonderin’
hey rob,
super huge fan. got a scud tattoo. don’t make a movie that sucks bc then i’ll be sad about my tattoo. can’t wait for #21.
I don’t think I hated Scud, I hated myself. Now I like me and here we are.
Love to see the pic. I have some computer images. I’ll see if I can upload them. Thanks for the good words! 9 pages left.
Squid Balls!
I’d love to get some new Scud-wear….my oldies are a bit tattered from over use!
send them to –
Wow, I was just looking on the wikipedia Scud entry because I felt nostalgic and I couldn’t even believe it when I read that #21 will finally be coming out.
Wow, This is just like Schubert coming back from the dead and finishing his “Unfinished Symphony”....and then shooting everyone with his pinkies out.
Hey Rob, been a couple weeks but i managed to get another pic together of more clay figures i had made of your characters… youve probably moved on by now lol im sure you have alot going on… anyway just out of curiosity did you get around to posting the first image? and where were you going to do that?
also if you were able to find any of the digital pics by Elwood let me know… i just got a new pc and im thinking of making a screen saver of just scud art
andother then yours -i believe his is definately the next coolest thing…. although i did have fun looking through some fan art on DeviantArt.com…. Anyone out there looking to see some decent stuff to wet your appetite for feb, check it out!By the way i was wondering if youre going to cram any cool stuff into the omnibus that wasnt in the original printings… like unpublished sketches you drew in crayon on the paper they put over your table at the macaroni grill?
Just read Scud 21. Rob, you still got it. Well done sir. Can’t wait for the rest.
Shawn
OMFGWTFBBQ!
-Daniel
