Sweet. I’ve always wanted to check out some Scud but I live in the shit hole known as Sweden so I’ve never really bothered to try and track down the old issues. Hopefully someone will ship this new collection book all over the world?
Keep kickin’ ass!
So, we got some good news at the end of last year. Steve Rude is bringing back Nexus and The Moth, and Mike Allred is starting up Madman again. And now Scud’s gonna throw down for one more? Awesome man, because going to the comic book store has been pretty depressing. I am so sick of boring melodramatic zombie comics, manga influenced gossip comics with all the depth of a high schooler’s MySpace photo, and retroactively stillborn TV/movie adaptations. Is going to the comic book store going to be fun again? Thanks for helping out man, even if it’s only for one golden issue.
You asked what we were still left with after Scud ended. I’m a big fan of yours and have followed you from Scud to Twigger to Monster House (if you wanna call that yours.) And I have half a brain in my head, so I thought you might want to know hat I have to say.
I love Scud and the feel of the series, but you really won me over with a couple of the side characters. There was always a layer below the action of your Black Octopus work that made me profoundly depressed. I’m sure that it had to do with Sussusio’s relationship with her parents. It had nothing to do with me identifying with her and adding my own emotions to the mix (I don’t fuck robots), it was all conveyed in the storytelling. I seem to remember Hank Gritt being up in heaven with Scud, so my hope is that you see it fit to address this. Even if it’s just Hank looking at Sussudio’s limbless corpse. (I’m not trying to suggest that you have this happen, but letting you know about my “feelings”)
My other hangup in the Scud universe is Drywall. Drywall: Unzipped is one of the most moving comics I’ve ever read (fuck all those fancy pants “graphic novels”), and it deals with somewhat similar (familial) issues as Black Octopus. I suspect that you are getting around to this as well in Scud #21, as it was always my impression that system was (Church Lady voice engage) “maybe… oh, I don’t know… Satan!?” And I guess you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do, but I’m almost inclined to think that having a definite end to that story might take away a little bit of it’s punch! D:U is really important and special to me, and I’m probably not the only one.
But hey man. You’re ten times the storyteller you were before, so however you decide to wrap this stuff up is gonna be kick ass. So, I guess all I really wanna say is… looking forward to it!
Sorry all my questions and crap are so long, this is just really awesome, and its always great to hear about your new projects.
And, I don’t know, I guess its because I have experienced people trying to tell me how I should write my own things, but how do you deal with all of the jerks who try to tell you how to write your own goddamn book?
Sorry for ANOTHER question, but I am astonished you can do it, work up the strength to do your thing again, and as soon as you annouce it you have 100 Armchair Writers telling you how your own book should end.
I’m very excited that your doing one more SCUD comic. What I mostly love is the fact that you WANT to do it. As much as I love your film work, I am glad your embrassing (SP?) the comics medium again, if only for one issue.
I can’t wait to read it and I mostly can’t wait to read that giant size collected edition of the whole series as well.
If I have one question, will the collection be in black and white, or will it be in color? I know it will be a bitch to color all twenty issues, but I loved how you colored the first issue reprint that you did all those years ago.
I found your “intended” plot for #21 on the Robot Bastard forum, with Jeff dying at the center of the Earth. You’re not still going with that, are you? That would be a plum depressing way for Scud to end.
Fantastic news! The series will finally have closure.
Even better is that it will be one large collected edition. I’ve had several friends want to get these collections after viewing mine; however, with the trades out of print, it was almost impossible.
Will there be a sketchbook section to the book? I really hope so. Your visuals were always laugh-inducing. I’ve always considered your character designs to be some of the most inspired creations in the comics medium.
It’s cool to find out that you’re doing well in the movie industry (loved Robot Bastard by the way) but please visit comics every decade or so. You have been missed. It was a lot more fun with Scud on the shelves.
The word to describe how I feel is expectant. After so many years I finaly accepted Scud 20 as the end of a good story. Had Scud ended with 21 ten years ago would it still have this much love? As a big scud fan I won’t protest because I just like the way you draw Rob and I hope the book has a lot of guns and explosions that made 1-5 bonified classics. Well, here’s to the suspension of disbelief.
i just want to thank you for allowing me to be reunited with billy ocean after 18 years. without scud issue #19, billy ocean’s “carribean queen” would be just a faint memory. now, there’s no more love on the run. thank you.
I’m so glad Scud is wrapping up. Thanks for republishing in a giant collected edition-I remember reading a Wizard piece so long ago and then trying to figure out where to find Scud. I didn’t get to read any until college (about 6 yrs ago) and loved every bit of it. I have all the trades and wish you the best in any medium you choose-but it’s so great that you’re finishing Scud!!!
P.S. Could you again include the “You’re My Bitch Now” temp tattoo from Programmed for Damage? I lost my original, and am thinking about having it done permanently as a testament to beating brain cancer. Thanks for your creativity and inspiration!
By chance I met a Scud fan in an Art class about a year ago. He had the exact same idea about you and some shit about selling out or something. Probably the same douche.
This is going to be great because the SCUD story is told in a Campbellian circle…I can’t wait to see all of the fans faces when they read book 21 and it’s just book 1 reprinted at the end (but don’t complain because Rob is adding a whole new layer of zipotone to make it unique).
“From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There’s more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There’s far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high
Through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round
It’s the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life
It’s the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life”
With your interest in film, you once wrote: “Hopefully you’ll be WATCHING Scud #21 instead of reading it,” so why come back to the comics medium, and why now? Also, on the writeup of your Batman ‘fanfilm’, you said, “Comic books are gay even the ones I made” Although I always assumed that was mostly tongue-in-cheek, I have to wonder if you dislike the medium. How does making a comic compare to making film?
I miss drawing and if I’m going to print all the books in one book why not finish it? I have some time to do it. I like all mediums of story telling. I’m not a fan of super heroes. It was tounge in cheek. I’d rather make a film.
(paraphrased from comments posted under “Scud 21”)
Thanks for responding to my comments. BTW, I was actually 19 when I did the Scud website which was done as a CompSci 150 assignment when I was in college. Evidently, I spent more money on comics than I did on booze. You may recall that my links section was jokingly entitled “Links to other Scud pages that were probably done better than this one”.
I’m so glad to see how enthused you are in these vlogs. I’m also terribly happy that this is going to be one giant book of everything.
Question: is it going to be ALL NEW (ie, redrawn… Lucasarts style) or are you taking the original works, putting them untouched into a giant volume and adding the final chapter? I assume you have full control over the previous works now.
If it is redrawn… should we expect childish CGI creatures and jeff shooting first… oh wait. nevermind.
Will you adopt me? I know I am 30, but cmon. I dont eat much.
Ha, awesome.
My convulted ass question got shot across the screen, i’m honored.
I taped an answer but it was too long. maybe another time.

Ahahahaha,
After hearing Rob read my message on his video blog, I feel like a real nerd. lol.
At least I wasn’t the one to update it on wikipedia. haha…

Did not mean to put a strike thru for half of that last comment. My bad!
Scud Fan Kevin Miller just sent me this
Sweet!
“well fuck you man”

“You must be the happiest man in the world.”
Now DATS SARCASIM!
I am physically unable to wait for the Scud book. Ow.
Pens.
microns right?
Scud inspired me to go to med school. Thanks Rob!
I have a question, Rob.

“I’d rather make a film”
So the question is will you?
Eventually.
So you’re saying that there is a chance…..oh yah boyeee.

Great site! I love tattoos and have a few myself.
