Ah man Rob it’s so good to read that you’re doing better than you were when you did Scud 20. I gotta say your drive to finish Scud is inspiring me to stop being such a lazy dick in my own life. I really should be reaching towards my goals more.
I really can’t wait until the collection ships so I can get my friends to go buy it. I’m really tired of being one of the few people I know who has basked in the glory that is Scud.
Anyway keep on going Rob, all your fans are rooting for ya.
Rob,
I am so excited for this gigantic book to come out! I first got into Scud when I was in like fifth grade and it has truly been a test of endurance waiting for something like this. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I think you’re great and wish you the best of luck.

Re: “The problem is that comics take so long to do. In the time it took me to draw like 70 pages of Scud, I directed four episodes of a TV show. And in the time that I could have directed four episodes of a TV show, I could have directed a feature. So you have to go, “Hmm…””
Its still totally worth it because comics are the greatest medium. You have no budget restrictions and absolute artistic control. It’d be cool if they weren’t so labor and time intensive, but I can honestly say I’m more excited about reading the Scud finale than any movie or tv show that’s come out in the last 10 years.
That was one of the better interviews I’ve read. I appreciate the depth you go into with each question, Rob.
You mentioned doing a page with a brush. Are you doing all of #21 with a brush, or was it just that one page that got you started? What did you think of your final art as opposed to your pen-work?
“Actually just spoke with Rob and that was never meant to be posted at Newsarama so seems someome over there is in a bit of trouble and not by me for once. Anyways Rob is cool with everything and he is pleased with the way the Scud came out and when you all see the 6” I think you will be pleased.”

Is this legitimate sir? Did you just speak to him about this and everything is okay now? And you’re pleased with the process of how the figure is coming along? If so, can you please tell us more about it? It just seems that for so long, Shocker Toys has made many promises but has shown very little progress, yet he is saying you are now pleased with everything. It just seems fishy. I hope to hear your input on this.
Thanks!
I was pretty unprofessional bitching about Shocker in that interview. Too bad. The interview was so positive and inspiring and then there’s this bad-will pot hole in the middle of it. Lame of me.
Unprofessional it may be (I personally disagree that it was) its still how a lot of your fans feel. We just want a nice Scud figure in the stores, like all those other Indie ones that are out.
Im curious though, the mistake as you put it, is that mentioning it or signing with Shocker?
I think it was a very bad thing to go with Shocker. Especially with their history on making figures (or not making figures). But you didn’t know that. So not insulting you.
I hope that this gets straighten out. There’s always Marvel Toys Legendary Comic Book Heroes.
Wow. That was definitely the most introspective interview I’ve read of yours. The tale of why you did Scud in the 1st place is something I can definitely identify with. Not on the same level, of course. I don’t have a creative bone in my body, but I won’t bore you with the specifics. Actually, I identify with A LOT of the life experiances you described, and the things you said…
Haha, a cynical side of me kind of wants to see that original ending you had planned. Not that I want Scud to end that way, but it would be kind cool just to see it. Sort of like a ‘What If?’ kind of thing. And yeah, I’d definitely agree that the big book is the best way to go. I think it’s safe to say that that’s what all the fans want. A hardcover would be awesome. Image should totally do that.
Well, My back issues just came in the mail today, so I’m gonna go do some reading now. Thanks again for Scud #21! I can’t wait to finally see it. I’m also interested in what this painted page you referred to is… and, “go out with a bang”? Is Scud gonna self-destruct?
That was such an uplifting and positive read. I have to say, its good to know your life is going so great and the effect it is having on the stuff your working on. (and vice versa) Like the guy who interviewed you, I’m definitely taking the bit on finishing what you start to heart. A friend and I started working on a short film last year and thus far we’ve only filmed about three usable minutes. shrug
I was one of those fans who waited in line to meet you at the San Diego Con. The kid with the religious family who wants me to be a missionary. My friend loved you and Kate’s reaction to when I told you that…
Heh. I just spent the last few months working on my biggest animation project ever, having no free time, getting no sleep, and being terrified it wouldn’t be in on time, and now that it’s finished, I read your interview and now I want to immediately get back to writing my comic book.
Just got through reading the whole interview. You are dead on about jumping on Shocker Toys for not releasing the product. If they don’t come through, pull the rights back and get another company to do it.
Loved the part about getting to something started today. I live by that rule everyday.
Great interview, and if you do decide to go with an initial Hardcover release, I wouldn’t doubt it would sell quickly.
Personally I would be anal and buy 2, one to read through and one to just sit pristine on my shelf of stuff that I bought and just admire. (also the fact that my fiancee’ would like her own helps…)
Your advice on starting things today instead of tomorrow is really an age old adage, but seriously, hearing it again and again can’t drive home the point enough. Especially coming from someone that I look up to in life. You’ve followed your dreams and made it happen, a better story there is not.

Great interview!

Shockertoys not pulling their weight? Should’ve gone with the other company thats got 10+ Indie Comics figures into Wallmart etc recently!
Geoff Beckett’s response to your comments about your questions about where the Scud figure is:

“Wow thats great but he has the kini and the 6” on the way…..weeeeee”

Please stop bashing Shocker. I made a mistake.

I shouldn’t have mentioned it on Newsarama.
I also want to add that my interviewer, Zack, is not at fault here. It was all me.

Hey Rob… we’re all on your side here… take your time… i already put money aside for the big ass scud!

I always thought the scud toy on the issue 9 cover would have been the obvious model.
Man, your posts keep getting better and better.
Keep up the good work!
I can’t wait to see HV and Jack in theaters.
Would you want to direct it?

Let me just say thanks Rob. Your interview really helped me out (and a friend I linked it to) the other day.
wait so..issue 21 is going to be released on its own as WELL as with the collection, right?
